Royal Education Centres

The Royal Education Centres feature a variety of demonstrations and activities designed to involve our visitors directly in the fair experience. Centres take unique advantage of the available resources to encourage students, through hands-on participation, to gain positive attitudes and a better understanding of the scientific dimensions of the agri-food system.

Look for these Centres marked with a green sign throughout the Fair...

1. Horse Care (Hall A)
Handle feed and grooming tools for horses. Ask questions of the horse experts. Visitors to this centre learn about the many responsibilities involved in proper horse care.

2. Cattle (Hall B)
Compare and contrast the characteristics of beef cattle and dairy cattle. Look at their body shape. Feel samples of their feed. Examine the tools farmers use to care for each. Also, learn about the technology used on beef, dairy and veal farms today.

3. Sheep (Lower East Annex)
Learn all about the care and development of these dual-purpose animals. Get involved in every facet of wool processing from the fleece to the finished product: washing, dying, spinning, and carding.

4. Swine (Industry Building)
This centre features different pig breeds at various stages of growth including a sow and her litter. Talk to pig farmers about their responsibilities on the farm. Learn about food consumption, housing and health care for swine.

5. Animal Care (Lower East Annex)
Ask and answer questions about feeding, housing and health care for animals. Featured activities include live animal demonstrations conducted by expert staff and the latest in research and technology.

6. Egg Grading (Hall B)
Learn about egg production from laying hens to the grading station. Solve the mysterious origins of brown and white eggs. Talk to "eggsperts" from Bumbrae Farms and uncover the keys to raising healthy birds and producing nutritious eggs. Test the strength of an egg shell. Look inside an egg and compare its size to the hen's age.

7. Field Crops (Upper West Annex)

Learn about grain corn. See plants in various stages of development and learn about the production cycle from planting to harvest as well as the equipment, techniques and technologies used on today's farms. You'll be surprised at the wide array of products, such as toothpaste that contain grain corn in some form.

8. Biotechnology (Upper West Annex)
Brought to you by the University of Guelph, four engaging, multi-media stations make up this presentation focusing on different facets of biotechnology. Learn about Monarch butterflies, micropropogation, worms, and DNA.

9. Honey/Beekeeping (Hall A)
Locate the Queen Bee, while observing the behaviour of other bees in the hive. Examine some of the equipment and technology used in the beekeeping industry and discover the contribution honey bees make to Canada's agri-food system.

10. Maple Syrup (Hall A)
Maple syrup production is a springtime activity unique to parts of Canada and the United States, with the end product on display here for competition. Visitors try out the tools used in the maple bush, while learning about the chemistry and physics of production.

11. Teacher Resource (Hall A)
Check out the newest activity-based teaching materials dealing with agriculture and food-related topics. This is one-stop shopping for teachers at its best - with many resources available free of charge! Great for classroom follow-ups to any Royal school trip.

13. Goats (Industry Building, Hall B/C)
Learn all about goats. See different breeds of goats at different ages and stages of development. Compare "kids" lunches and examine a display of fibre products.
