Food and Food Products

The Royal is home to many farm product organizations which return year to give visitors the opportunity to see how the foods they are familiar with in their daily lives get from the farm to the dinner table. There is a vast diversity of foods produced in Canada and the food exhibits are staffed with people who are part of the food system and can answer questions about food production. Students are encouraged to ask questions, taste new products and learn all sorts of interesting facts about food.

Butter Sculptures - West Side of Coliseum, Dairy Lane
Students from the Ontario College of Art and Design as well as those from Central Tech high School in Toronto create this popular attraction. Unique works of art are carved from 25-kilogram blocks of real butter, which requires the artists to work in the cooler so that the butter can be kept at a constant temperature. The judging for the butter contest is Thursday, November 9 at 10:30 a.m. The butter is carved into all sorts of shapes and sizes and every year the judges have a tough time picking a winner.

Dairy Products Showcase - West Side of Coliseum, Dairy Lane
Dairy Lane features a wide variety of products, all of which are made from milk! Students will see many types of cheese, including some made from goat’s milk, as well as butter. Not all dairy foods can be on display here however because many are perishable and would need to be kept refrigerated. Judging of the dairy products occurs before the fair, so that all the winners can proudly display their trophies and ribbons for visitors. This interesting area of the fair showcases the diversity of the dairy industry in Canada.

Egg Grading Information Centre - Exhibit Hall "A"
Here students can learn about egg production from laying hens to the grading station. Visit the display of laying hens and solve the mysterious origins of brown and white eggs. Talk to "eggsperts" about the egg business and discover the key to raising healthy birds and producing nutritious eggs. You can also test the strength of an eggshell, look inside an egg and see what size eggs are produced by hens of different ages.

Field Crops - Upper West Annex
Field crops include such commercially produced crops as wheat, oats, barley rye, soybeans, field beans, lentils, peas, buckwheat, corn, alfalfa, clover, grasses, sunflowers, flax, canola, potatoes, hay, brassicas (turnip, kale, mustard), tobacco and forage crops. The World Championships for field crops takes place at The Royal. These magnificent trophies have been presented to World Championship winners every year since 1947. Tobacco continues to be an important crop in Ontario. Although the market in Canada is declining, our tobacco is popular in world markets, particularly Europe. There are five classes of tobacco judged at The Royal.
