Farm to Table, Hall "A"

Farm to Table is our newest food education initiative and is aimed at bridging the gap between the farm-related experiences of the Education Centres and the food products that we are all familiar with. This program introduces visitors to basic processing concepts themed around Canada's Food Guide.

The Canadian Grain Commission is back again this year with a presentation on the story of "grain to bread". Grind real Ontario wheat into flour. Pearl barley and roll oats, then crush canola seeds to extract the canola oil. Students turned bakers can mix and mold bread dough for the ovens on site. Examine the ingredients and enjoy the smell and taste of fresh baked bread.

The Meat and Alternatives display presented by the Ontario Cattlemen’s Association features areas on the grading and inspection processes for meat products and a section focussing on nutrition, food safety and the new Health Check program.

The Fruit and Vegetables section is sponsored by Longo's. Sample the tremendous variety of Ontario apples and learn what they are best used for. See the apple cider process, and smell the fresh baked apple pies. There will also be a display of hardy Ontario vegetables for visitors to sample.

The Dairy Bureau of Canada presents the Milk & Milk Products food group. Visitors have the opportunity to make butter, sample Canadian cheeses and learn about the Canadian dairy industry from an interactive CD-ROM kiosk at the display.

Pizza Nova will be conducting demonstrations daily designed to give kindergarten and elementary school-aged children a behind-the-scenes view of the pizza-making process that appeals to each of their senses. The children are welcome to participate in dough shaping activities and observe an authentic pizzaiolo (pizza maker) in action. There will be "fun packs" for the children and free pizza for everyone.
